Locally Grown Food Celebrated at the Yorktown Grange Fair, September 9-12, 2010

The theme of this year’s Yorktown Grange Fair is “Yorktown Heights, NY…Locally Grown!” The event, taking place from September 9 to 12, highlights the contributions of local farms and the achievements of local businesses. A true agricultural fair that’s unique to Westchester County, the Yorktown Grange Fair provides family fun while preserving the rural heritage of northern Westchester.

For decades the Grange Fair has provided a showcase for locals to “show off” their best home grown (or homemade) goods—whether vegetables, flowers, needlework, baking, photography, livestock or poultry. The produce and vegetable auction at fair’s end is a favorite event. This year, in keeping with the theme of Locally Grown, visitors will also be able to sample food demonstrations from local chefs and restaurants in the commercial tent area. Celebrated chef and restaurateur Jonathan Pratt will be among those on hand.

Area farms will present vegetable and flower displays at the fair, and other highlights include a horse show exhibition, livestock animals, a tractor parade, audience participation games (pie eating, watermelon eating and nail driving), carnival rides, live entertainment, and the popular Racing Pigs racetrack. All fair revenue maintains the building and grounds, funds the next fair and benefits local charities and community service organizations.
