Community Leadership Forum on Environmental Sustainability in White Plains

The Sisters of the Divine Compassion in White Plains present a Community Leadership Forum on Environmental Sustainability on Tuesday, October 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place in the New York State Judicial Institute at Pace University School of Law in White Plains.

The half-day forum addresses the spirituality of stewardship for the earth, sustainable building and renovation practices and best practices in campus land use. Speakers will cover funding sources, credits, incentives, and new developments in local and statewide legislation and policy. The conference includes the panel discussions “Greening your building – A Practical Guide,” and “New Statewide Policy Developments and Their Impact on You.” The program includes a complimentary luncheon with a keynote speaker and campus tours of greening efforts.

With help from the Verizon Foundation, the Sisters recently conducted an environmental study. It resulted in more energy efficient lighting, the installation of motion sensors to control lighting usage, and the creation of rain gardens and bioswales as part of a rainwater management and bio-retention system. Founded in 1886, the Sisters of the Divine Compassion are dedicated to the education and empowerment of women and to helping marginalized families.
