Clean Plate Culinary is holding a fundraising holiday event on Friday, December 14, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Tuckahoe Community Center. Part of the proceeds from this evening will support people in Queen’s Broad Channel who lost their homes during hurricane Sandy.

The event features music, healthy food and treats, door prizes, a special cooking demonstration and an array of health professionals sharing tips on staying healthy during the holidays and winter season. Admission is $40, and Clean Plate Culinary owner Natasha Bernardez says that funds raised will also sponsor a holiday meal for a family who lost everything in the hurricane.

“Our goal is to give back, as this year’s holidays will be filled with mixed emotions as we begin the process of rebuilding our communities,” says Bernardez. “We hope people will come out with their families and support this fundraiser or donate to a family in need.”

To purchase tickets or learn more visit CleanPlateCulinary.com, email info@cleanplateculinary.com or call 347.644.8306. The Tuckahoe Community Center is located at 71 Columbus Ave. in Tuckahoe.

Restorative Yoga Workshops in Mt. Kisco Bring Peace and Tranquility to the Holidays

karla_0043aQuest Yoga Arts in Mt. Kisco presents relaxing and restorative yoga workshops on two Sundays, December 9 and 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is $25 per session.

“It’s been a busy fall and many of us have had to deal with quite a bit of stress,” says instructor Karla Diamond. “We want to help keep people healthy and invite them to come and take a break. The workshops allow people to relax fully and deeply, reducing stress, muscle tension, fatigue, blood pressure and mental overload.”

Diamond says that restorative yoga involves propping the body in gentle poses, usually on the floor, to get the best alignment and support for releasing muscle tension. “The poses are held for 5 to 15 minutes, freeing the breath and allowing the body to deeply relax,” she notes. “The practice restores the body to balance and improves digestion, elimination and breathing.”

A certified yoga instructor for more than a decade, Diamond also teaches the Alexander Technique and sees clients for bodywork. To inquire about her sessions, visit Awareness-in-Action.com and call 914.649.9565.

Quest Yoga Arts is located at 11-13 Main St., 2nd floor, in Mt. Kisco. To register and learn more about their classes and workshops, visit QuestYogaArts.com.

Revitalize and Heal Yoga Retreat in the Catskills with Adrea Robles and Saskia Shakin

Adrea Robles in restorative pose

Liberation yoga teachers Adrea Robles and Saskia Shakin are teaming up to present a powerful weekend healing retreat from October 19 to 21, 2012, at the Won Dharma Center in the Catskills. Revitalize and Heal focuses on awakening the healer within everyone and presents yogic, dietary and energetic healing tools for taking charge of one’s own healing process.

Through self-study, group work, and discussion of spiritual anatomy, participants will work to uncover energetic blocks to self-healing and begin the process of working through them. The retreat will focus on such healing tools as yogic breathing, movement, simple ritual, creative imagination, sound, meditation, and skillful attitudes for dealing with inner conflict. The retreat features daily yoga classes, a focus on positive dietary changes and information about detoxing cosmetics.

Robles and Shakin will also provide take home recipes for green smoothies and other healthy treats, and help participants to develop plans for integrating the tools they learn over the weekend. “We also want people to step out of their stressful lives and find tranquility in the beauty of the Catskills,” says Robles. “The Won Dharma Center is a natural setting for contemplation, renewal, and healing, surrounded by wooded foothills and streams that are a pleasure to explore.”

For more information, call 845.803.8389, email info@LiberationNY.com or visit LiberationNY.com. The Won Dharma Center is located at 361 State Route 23 in Claverack.

One Woman Show Profiles Catherine of Siena at Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center in Ossining

Sister Nancy Murray, OP, will perform St. Catherine of Siena: A Woman for Our Times as a fundraiser for the Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center in Ossining on October 14, 2012. The drama is based on translations of 400 letters in which the 14th Century Italian saint debated political and church issues of the day with princes, cardinals and popes.

“Catherine of Siena was a precocious but rebellious child in a large Tuscan family who grew up to be a radical feminist with lots of spunk and humor,” says Murray. “She wielded extraordinary influence for a woman of her time, and is credited with helping to influence Pope Gregory XI to bring the Papacy back from Avignon to Rome and reform the clergy.”

Murray, the sister of film star Bill Murray, has been portraying the pioneering saint for more than twelve years. “I never would have guessed when I entered religious life that I would be doing this,” she says. When she is not onstage, Murray works in a shelter in Chicago or with migrant children.

Tickets for the two matinee performances of St. Catherine of Siena: A Woman for Our Times are $35 and include lunch. Call 914.941.4455 to learn more and make reservations.

The Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center is located at 299 North Highland Ave. in Ossining. For more info visit Mariandale.org.

Sylvia D’Andrea Offers Energy Workshop in White Plains on September 23, 2012

Sylvia D’Andrea

The Divine Compassion Spirituality Center in White Plains, NY, will host a one-day workshop, “Exploring the Power of Your Energy Anatomy,” on September 23 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Facilitator Sylvia D’Andrea says she will teach attendees how to work with their personal energy as an alternate way to access their creativity in daily life.

“When we pursue each day with a personal energy road map, we have the ability to create a life filled with our best and highest intentions for joy, peace, abundance, hope, relationships—whatever we wish to create. Getting in touch with that energy is what this workshop is about,” she says. “We’ll take a look at our personal energy through the concept of quantum physics, what scientific research and other recent testing has uncovered that supports the concept of a personal energy anatomy, along with tools we can use to strengthen it.”

Sylvia D’Andrea is an accredited EMF Balancing Technique practitioner, a certified Tama-Do practitioner and a Tao Yin Fa-Chi Kung instructor. Her practice is in Ramsey, New Jersey, and she also offers workshops in Fair Lawn, New Jersey.
