Inspired things to do in Westchester and Putnam Counties, New York

Monthly Red Tent Temple Gatherings for Women at Ixchel Center in White Plains

Ixchel Center in White Plains is hosting Red Tent Temple gatherings each month on the full moon. The gatherings are reminiscent of the moon lodges and menstrual huts that took place centuries ago, when women would remove themselves from daily responsibilities in order to be cared for by their elders.

“Red Tents are a place to care for one another through healing, song, meditation, council, rest and sharing,” says shamanic healer Mikki Davis, who leads the monthly gatherings with women’s health expert Cathy Lipsky. “Participants can come to nourish themselves, express their unique wisdom, tell stories, listen deeply to each other and cultivate a women–honoring culture.”

For more information, visit AlisaStarkWeather.com and scroll down to the section on the Red Tent Temple movement. The next Red Tent Temple Gathering takes place on Sunday, February 10, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. To register, email cathy@HolisticNP.com or mbaloydavis@gmail.com or call 914.912.2351. Ixchel Center is located at 308 Battle Ave. in White Plains.

Celebrating Fifteen Years of Quality Yoga Instruction in White Plains

The Yoga Garden of White Plains is celebrating 15 years of quality yoga instruction in the community, and students are invited to join the celebration. Anyone who takes their first class before February 28 will be entered to win one month of unlimited yoga classes.

“We welcome students who are curious about yoga but intimidated by images of people doing acrobatic or gymnastic looking poses,” says owner and instructor Patty Holmes. “The Yoga Garden is the place to begin your yoga journey, and I teach with the highest respect for all who go down this yogic path.”

Holmes says that she teaches five principles of yoga, as opposed to one particular style. “The result is that, as our body learns to integrate these principles, poses reveal themselves in a beautiful and organic way that makes our yoga practice joyful, healthy and balanced.” Over the years, hundreds of students have taken classes at The Yoga Garden, located at St. Bartholomew’s Church, where both group classes and private instruction are offered.

The Yoga Garden is located at 82 Prospect St. in White Plains. For more information call 914.325.7180, email yogagardenwp@gmail.com or visit YogaGardenWP.com.

Teatown’s Hudson River EagleFest Returns

Each winter more than 100 bald eagles from Canada and northern New York and New England fly south to the lower Hudson Valley to feed on fish and waterfowl in unfrozen waters. Teatown Lake Reservation’s annual Hudson River EagleFest takes advantage of this phenomenon by helping visitors to view and learn about these majestic birds. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, February 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Croton Point Park.

EagelFest features multiple viewing locations along the Hudson River; each staffed with birding experts, to help people see America’s national symbol in the wild. Informational shows will run all day at Croton Point Park, presented by a variety of experts, on many aspects of bald eagles, owls and other raptors.

Additional eagle viewing sites along the Hudson River that are free of charge include the Kathryn W. Davis RiverWalk Center in Sleepy Hollow, Steamboat River Park in Verplanck, Riverfront Green Park in Peekskill, and Boscobel House and Gardens in Garrison. Keepsake maps, available at Teatown and each viewing site, will give precise directions to each location. Details on the daylong event can be found at Teatown.org/eaglefest/index.htm.

Teatown Lake Reservation, located at 1600 Spring Valley Road in Ossining, is a private, non-profit nature preserve and education center spanning the towns of Yorktown, Cortlandt and New Castle. To learn more, call 914.762.2912 or visit Teatown.org. Croton Point Park is located at 1A Croton Point Avenue in Croton-on-Hudson.

Workshop Offers Anxiety Relief Through Feldenkrais

Larry Attile, a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner, is offering an anxiety reduction workshop on Sunday, March 3, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in Scarsdale. Using the simple, gentle movements of Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement exercises, Attile will teach participants how to free themselves from habitual physical patterns that contribute to, and exacerbate, anxiety symptoms.

“We experience anxiety in our bodies, and these muscular and neurological responses can become habitual,” says Attile. “Such responses then worsen the chronic tension and fatigue associated with anxiety.”

Attile’s workshop will focus on how people develop habitual patterns of muscular tension and poor breathing, and what new responses can reestablish internal balance. “Participants will leave the workshop with new ways of intervening that have been proven to alleviate anxiety in moments of stress,” he says. To reserve a space or learn more, call 914.588.0763. The workshop fee is $95.

The workshop will be held at 79 Montgomery Ave. in Scarsdale. For more information about Feldenkrais and Larry Attile, visit WestchesterChiKung.com.

Free Oneness Blessing Ceremony in Mt. Kisco

StarVisions, Inc. council member Anne Bentzen, MSOT, RMT along with Oneness Blessing Trainers, Rosario Mazer and Vera Angelico, provide a free Oneness Blessing community service program at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Mt. Kisco on Saturday, February 2, at 10 a.m.

This introductory program, sponsored by StarVisions, offers insights into understanding how the universal connection of all humanity can free the mind to experience more joy.

“2013 is a year for moving into our hearts and experiencing life, rather than having our brains try to understand it,” says Bentzen. “The central understanding of oneness is that inner transformation and awakening into higher states of consciousness do not come from intellectual understanding, but from a neurobiological process in the brain, whereby one’s experience of life is redefined at its core.”

Bentzen says these aims are achieved by the Oneness Deeksha, a transfer of divine grace that initiates a journey into higher states of consciousness. “The Deeksha is believed to affect the different lobes of the brain, reducing stress levels and intensifying feelings of love, joy and awareness,” she says. “Millions across the globe testify to the calming and awakening effects of the Oneness Deeksha, which evokes the truth that is inherent in every tradition, religion and culture.”

The program includes instruction, video and the giving of the Oneness Blessing from Bentzen and others. Doors open at 9:45 a.m. and all are welcome.

Eco-Friendly Shopping for Buildings, Babies, and Beyond in Scarsdale

Green Design Expo in Scarsdale

Just in time for spring and all that’s green, there’s a new space in Scarsdale that’s a one-stop shop for eco-friendly construction, design and lifestyle products, as well as an educational venue for professionals and the community. Green Design Expo (GDE) quietly opened on February 21, but it will hold its grand opening at 4 p.m. April 28, with a colorful rainbow theme and lots of student involvement.

GDE offers a wide variety of green products for home, school and office, like non-toxic, 100-percent recycled toys, BPA-free lunch boxes and water bottles, 100-percent recycled and recyclable folders and binders, biodegradable kitchenware, LED flame-less candles, and energy-efficient light bulbs. Building projects can be “greened” with Solatubes, PV solar systems, cork, Marmoleum, bamboo and responsibly harvested floors, as well as eco-friendly carpets, rugs and furniture, wall coverings, tiles, hardware, ceilings, plumbing and fixtures, and even a green roof or garden.

GDE’s owner and founder, Eva Finkelstein, is promoting community involvement by offering work/study programs with area schools. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will involve students from several school districts in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland Counties, including Scarsdale, Greenburgh, Ardsley, Yonkers, Bronxville, Bedford, Brewster, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle and Mamaroneck. “It’s a call to action-based, hands-on learning for all ages,” Finkelstein says.

Green Design Expo, located at 640 Central Park Ave., Scarsdale, NY, is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Contact the store at 914.902.5305, or visit it online at GreenDesignExpo.net.

Natural, Effective Allergy and Sinus Relief with a Funny Name

Hyun Kim

When herbalist Hyun Kim created Rhino Blaster it wasn’t called Rhino Blaster. It was simply known as “Hyun’s own personal nasal spray to relieve her allergy symptoms without the side effects of traditional medications.” When Hyun discovered how many other people were helped by her formulation, she decided to sell it and find a shorter name. Her friend dubbed it Rhino Blaster, and the name stuck.

Now, those suffering from allergies, stuffy sinuses or the uncomfortable dryness of winter air, indoor heating and airplane climates can purchase Rhino Blaster online, at some local pharmacies and at the birthplace of Rhino Blaster, Za Oh Pyung Acupuncture. Hyun says she wants to hear back from customers who use the product, too – especially if they want to buy another bottle.

Za Oh Pyung Acupuncture is located at 6 Depot Place in Scarsdale, NY. For more information and to purchase the product, visit rhinoblaster.com.

Grape Picking and Honey Harvest Party this weekend at the Greenburgh Nature Center

‘Tis the season to reap the harvest of vines and hives at the Greenburgh Nature Center (GNC). On Sunday, September 12 at 2 p.m., senior Naturalist Dean Fausel will guide visitors through a “demonstration” grape arbor where the picking is good. He’ll later help everyone make grape juice using a hand-operated press. The harvest from the beehives will be extracted by GNC Beekeeper H. Peet Foster, indoors and away from the active hives. There will be a free tasting of a variety of grape and honey-based treats, and fresh-from-the-hive honey will be available for purchase. The cost is $3 for GNC members, $7 for non-members.

The Greenburgh Nature Center is a 33-acre woodland preserve with trails, pond, gardens, and outdoor animal exhibits, including a birds of prey aviary as well as indoor exhibits.

The Center is located at 99 Dromore Road, off Central Park Avenue, in Scarsdale, NY. For more information, call 914.723.3470 or visit greenburghnaturecenter.org.
