Sharon Salzberg and Rachel Cowan: Celebrate Independence with Us – Loving Kindness as a Path to Inner Freedom

On July 5-7, 2013 at the Garrison Institute in Garrison, New York

Garrison Web ad Jun132Open to the public

This introductory weekend retreat is designed for anyone who has ever wanted to explore lovingkindness or chesed (the Hebrew word for lovingkindness practice) as a contemplative practice. No meditation experience is necessary. The retreat will be valuable for experienced practitioners and first-timers alike.

Recent research shows that meditative practices produce tangible benefits for personal and professional life, ranging from stress reduction and better heart health to improved self-awareness, intuition, emotional connection and acceptance. These particular practices also foster greater empathy, generosity and compassion.

Through periods of silent and guided reflection and group discussion, Sharon and Rachel will present various non-sectarian, accessible practices that can be pursued on their own or used to complement and deepen existing spiritual and professional practices. The teachers will also connect these contemporary practices with the traditions from which they derive.

Sharon SalzbergSharon Salzberg has been a student of Buddhism since 1971. She teaches both intensive awareness practice (vipassana or insight meditation) and the profound cultivation of lovingkindness and compassion (the Brahma Viharas). She is a co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts and The Barre Center for Buddhist Studies. Sharon’s latest book is the New York Times bestseller, Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation. She is also the author of The Force of Kindness; Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience and Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness. For more information about Sharon, please visit www.SharonSalzberg.com.

The festival unites major musical figures with green activism and community spirit in one of the most scenic spots on the Hudson River.

Performers this year include Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Judy Collins, gospel legend Mavis Staples, David Bromberg and an unplugged Hot Tuna. Patterson Hood and Jason Isbell will play side-by-side with country music icon Kris Kristofferson, and new voices from The Last Bison and The Lone Bellow will ring out alongside Seeger himself, who will perform with long-time collaborator Lorre Wyatt.
