Conservation Café, Re>Think Local, Awaken Fair & Health Lectures this month

Conservation Café Addresses “Radioactive Gas in Our Pipelines” at Next Forum

cc-logo-2On Friday, October 4, Conservation Café presents “Radioactive Gas in Our Pipelines: What can be done about the gas coming into our homes and businesses?” from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Student Center of Pace University in Pleasantville, NY. Registration for this free, public information event begins at 8:15 a.m.

The program will focus on concerns about the anticipated pipeline delivery of fracked natural gas to this area from the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania. “The Marcellus Shale, which underlies Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and New York, is known for its significantly high levels of radon and short transport time to this region,” says Ellen Weininger, outreach director for Grassroots Environmental Education, an event co-sponsor. “This provides negligible decay time for the radon gas, which increases our risk of exposure to high levels of radon, the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers nationwide.”

Guest speakers include Albert F. Appleton, Senior Fellow at The Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design and former commissioner of New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection, Jeff Zimmerman, an environmental attorney and radon expert, and Dr. Sheila Bushkin-Bedient, a member of Concerned Health Professionals of NY and SUNY Albany’s Institute for Health and the Environment. A panel discussion with a question-and-answer session will follow the formal presentations. Homeowners, apartment dwellers, facility managers, public officials, health professionals and other concerned and involved community members are encouraged to attend.

Pace University is located on Bedford Rd. (Rte. 117) in Pleasantville, NY. For more information, visit Pace.edu. To learn more about Grassroots Environmental Education, visit GrassrootsInfo.org.

Blessing of the Animals in Hawthorne

Rev-Elizabeth-and-GonzoA Special Blessing of the Animals will take place at The Circle of Tranquility’s Garden in Hawthorne, NY, on Sunday morning, October 6. Reverend Elizabeth Matheson of the One Spirit Interfaith Seminary will conduct the service, which includes readings, prayers, poetry and individual blessings.

A donation of $20 is requested for each adult with up to two pets, and children are welcome. “We are also requiring reservations for all who wish to join us, as space is limited,” says Matheson. “If someone’s animal companion is unable to attend, they can bring a photo to be blessed.”

Matheson is a One Spirit Interfaith minister, spiritual counselor and Celtic shamanic practitioner who teaches meditation for relaxation and healing. “I’ve been doing this work for more than 20 years, and I’m available to all those who seek to open their heart to this light and guidance,” she says. Best Loved Body-Mind-Spirit Expo Returns to New York

Awaken-Shopping--Awaken-Fair-NB---finalThe ever-popular Awaken Wellness Fair returns to Westchester on Sunday, November 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel in Tarrytown, NY. The area’s oldest and best-loved body-mind-spirit-green expo outside of New York City attracts thousands of visitors and hundreds of exhibitors each year.

This educational and experiential event offers visitors a chance to sample and learn about products and services for vibrant living. “Many people are only aware of the allopathic route to health, which often suggests that we ‘take a pill’ for physical challenges,” says Awaken Wellness Fair founder and organizer Paula Caracappa. “This event attracts people who are curious about holistic practices, both ancient and cutting-edge, and the variety of healing and wellness methods that exist today.”

The expo features presentation rooms with 45-minute talks throughout the day. One room will focus on the scientific, while the other leans toward the metaphysical. Another area will hold more than a dozen intuitive readers, while gifted healers practice in yet another room. Appointments with readers and healers can be made in advance after purchasing a ticket at AwakentoYourBestSelf.com/Tickets.html.

As always, the Awaken Wellness Fair also features vendors offering the latest products and services to support a healthy lifestyle. Vendor and speaker opportunities are still available at ThePractitioners.com. To view participating exhibitors and purchase a discounted ticket, visit AwakenFair.com and click “Tarrytown.”

The Doubletree Hotel is located at 455 S Broadway, Tarrytown, NY.

Monthly Health Lectures Offered at Izumi Wellness

IzumiIzumi Wellness in Harrison, NY, is hosting a health lecture series that covers a different wellness topic each month. On Tuesday, October 22, Dr. Michiko Izumi will speak about the importance of digestive health. Future lecture subjects include cleansing diets, stress reduction, immune function, allergies, cholesterol, women’s health and the benefits of exercise.

At Izumi Wellness, doctors of chiropractic Hiro and Michiko Izumi have successfully helped many people find natural solutions to their health challenges through chiropractic care and enzyme nutrition therapy. Their main focus is prevention, and identifying the underlying causes of illness. “What we know is actually not a secret,” says Michiko. “The information is available to those who seek it, but it’s unlikely that people will learn about these things on national television or in popular magazines. We feel that our mission is to share this knowledge with the community and encourage people to be in charge of their own health.”

Izumi Wellness is located at 550 Mamaroneck Ave., Ste. 103, in Harrison, NY. To register for the lecture series, call 914.310.9000. For more information visit IzumiWellness.net.
